Regilding of the Paston Treasure auricular frame - Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery
This was an original hand carved 17th century auricular frame that we received after having been stripped back to the wood. The frame required re-gilding and ageing. The images show the process from sizing the wood, application of the gesso and bole then the laying of the gold leaf. Two antique auricular frames were used as reference to create the look of an original 17th century frame. The latter image is to indicate the contrast between our aged finish and the untouched newly applied gold leaf.
