Reproduction framing - English 17th century
Here we produced a copy of an English 17th century frame for a painting by Anthony van Dyck - commissioned by Paul Mitchell Ltd. The entire frame was hand-carved in jelutong wood (similar to lime) then water gilded and distressed to replicate a frame of that period. The images show the process for water gilding; one photo of a corner illustrates the contrast between the bright burnished gold adjacent to the aged finish. A panel was added to the top and the bottom of the reproduction frame to obscure sections of the canvas not to be displayed.
